About 2B
Second grade is such an exciting and important time. Our classroom is equipped with a variety of tools to enhance learning, including a SmartBoard and laptops. Additionally, there are many learning centers covering all subjects and an ever growing library. Students engage in many hands-on activities that make learning more enjoyable! Our students also attend six specials a week: Computers, Art, Gym , STREAM, Spanish, and Music. Beyond the classroom, students may participate in a range of after-school activities and special events that reinforce our core values of Faith, Knowledge, Community, and Respect. Listed below is a little bit about our curriculum and some Second Grade Highlights.
Our Curriculum
Religion: RCL Benziger - Be My Disciples
Students learn about our faith and how they live it each day. Second graders also receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. We will also host the Advent Prayer Service, a Communion Celebration Mass, and the May Crowning.
Communication Arts: Zaner Bloser - Superkids Reading Program
In second grade, students are ready to read text that is not phonetically controlled. They read grade-level literary books that promote growth in reading and informational texts in their SUPER magazines. At the same time, students review and consolidate essential phonics, spelling, and grammar skills and apply their skills in longer, more complex writing products (personal narratives, informative essays, opinion writing, poems, descriptive essays, and letter writing).  Students also work on neat handwriting and start the foundation of cursive writing.
Mathematics: Sadlier
Students will build upon the skills they learned in first grade. They will move onto more complex addition/subtraction that includes double digit addition/subtraction, with and without regrouping, multi- step word problems, adding three and four numbers. Students learn about place value to the hundreds, the basics of multiplication/division, time, graphs, money/making change, and more!
Science: Macmillan McGraw Hill - Science: A Closer Look
In life science, students learn more about plants and animals and how they live together. In earth science, students will learn about our planet, its landforms, bodies of water, the weather, the water cycle, and space. In physical science, students learn about states and changes in matter as well as energy and how things move.
Social Studies: Macmillan McGraw Hill - We Live Together
Students learn about different types of communities, our government, how laws affect them, and what it means to be a good citizen. They will also learn the geography of the earth and its natural resources. We learn about goods/services, needs/wants, producers/consumers, and more!

Reconciliation, Communion, and May Crowning
Students will receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion with their parish. Students and parents attend classes and learn at home about these Sacraments. First students receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation followed by the Sacrament of Communion at their parish churches. Once all have received their First Holy Communion, we have a celebration mass at Mount Carmel in Ridgewood as a class. After a Communion Breakfast students arrive at St. Catharine’s to crown Mary at our May Crowning. Please check the school calendar for the date of the celebration mass and May Crowning. As the dates start to approach, I will share more information regarding these celebrations.
Friend of the Week
Each student will get to shine when they are the Friend of the week. To start the week, they will bring in a Friend of the Week form to share with the class that tells us all about them, in addition, they can bring in any pictures they would like to share. Each following day, the Friend of the week brings in a special treasure to share with the class.
